Engraved by hand in hardened steel, dies and plates have been engraved in this manner since the early 19th century. Engraving in steel creates an impression with a level of detail impossible to achieve in copperplate engraving. The hardness of the steel offers generations of use without a loss of detail. Steel engraving can only be done by hand – not artificially produced by computers.
